FAQs: What Causes Blocked Drains?

Blocked drains are a real nuisance, but what causes them? The vast majority of blockages are created by an accumulation of hair, cooking fat and scraps of food that build up over time, but plumbers frequently pull out a wide array of other objects from homes across the country.

Household items such as children's toys, mobile phones and cups of tea turn up more often than you would think, and following a DIY job it's not uncommon for some cement to end up in the drainage system by mistake. This can cause a particularly immovable blockage and often leads to a complete replacement of a section of pipes.

Sometimes a passer-by can make use of a drain as a hiding place for stolen goods, so police have been known to recover cameras, laptops and jewellery and even bits of furniture and a motorbike!

As a rule of thumb it's best to try and limit the amount of solids that end up in your drains, but if you do find that you have a blockage then you'll need to call in the experts.
